The AOOS Short Film Contest is governed by the following rules. By participating, you agree to these Official Rules and the decisions of the judges, which are final. AOOS reserves the right to change these rules or cancel the film contest at any time, at its sole discretion.
The contest is open to anyone except employees of AOOS or their families, and members of the AOOS Board and their immediate families.
Your Rights
You retain all rights to any film you submit other than those rights licensed in the next sentence. By entering the contest, you hereby grant to AOOS a nonexclusive, royalty-free license to place the film on AOOS-affiliated web pages and show the film publicly at ocean-related events, or other venues for academic purposes. We will attribute credit using your name, and potentially your city and state of residence.
Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still warrant full usage rights. However, upon submission you must disclose when and where the film previously appeared. Entrants must not infringe on the rights of any other videographer, person, or organization, and cannot submit footage that involves the willful harassment of wildlife or damage to the environment by the videographer.
Image Format and Resolution
We recommend high-definition video for optimal quality, but will not disqualify films of lesser resolution. Please submit your film in .mp4 or .mov format.
Film Submission and Deadline
The deadline for submitting films is September 15, 2017. To submit your film, please fill out the online form at the bottom of this page. The form asks for a link to a web-based version of your film (YouTube or Vimeo, etc). You will also need to submit a hard copy of your film in its highest resolution on a memory stick to AOOS. Please label the memory stick with your name and the name of your film. You can mail it or hand deliver to:

Memory sticks must be postmarked by September 15, 2017. Please note that memory sticks will not be returned. Winners will be announced on or before November 30, 2017. AOOS reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control.
Legal Conditions
By entering, participants agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless AOOS, its respective subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, employees, attorneys, agents and representatives, from any and all third party liability for any injuries, loss, claim, action, demand or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with the competition (collectively, “Losses”), including without limitation any third party claim for copyright infringement, permitting issues or a violation of an individual’s right to privacy and/or publicity right. The Contest is void where prohibited by law.
