During the August 28th 2012 primary election, Alaskans will vote on Measure 2; passage of the measure would reinstate the Alaska Coastal Zone Management Act.
Across the country, coastal management programs are established to guarantee state and local participation in federal decisions on coastal issues. The Alaska Coastal Management Program was required to be reauthorized every six years, which ultimately did not happen in 2011. Alaska is currently the only coastal state without a coastal management program.
