From monitoring coastal sea level rise to exploring subseafloor microbial communities, there has been a remarkable surge in understanding the ocean and its processes. This report presents eight strategic research priorities for 2015-2025 that will continue to advance ocean science knowledge. The report assesses the infrastructure needed to support this research and makes recommendations for aligning current and planned infrastructure and budgets with the decadal science priorities in order to reach research goals. The report also recommends that the National Science Foundation rebalance its ocean science portfolio, which in recent years has shifted toward greater spending on research infrastructure at the expense of core science programs.
