New Portal Released
This winter, an early version of the Arctic Portal developed through STAMP was released on the AOOS website and is publicly accessible. Over 200 unique data layers currently reside in the portal ranging from habitat areas and oceanographic satellite data to real-time sensors and monitoring locations. The portal also includes a data catalogue where users can search, browse, map, or access metadata.
Recent updates have included:
- Refining the quality of the datasets, removing layers that were low resolution, outdated, or less relevant
- Adding 80 layers and metadata from the Audubon/Oceana Arctic Marine Synthesis data source, ranging from seabird breeding areas to whale migration routes and polar bear distribution.
- Ingesting 69 sampling data sets from the Russian-American Long-term Census of the Arctic (RUSALCA) program.
- Ingesting the 1 KM resolution NASA JPL Sea Ice Concentration data product.
Advisory Group Activities:
The 9-member STAMP advisory group participated in a webinar in late June to get an update on project progress, view a demo of the Arctic portal to date, and discuss potential course corrections. The advisory group was pleased with progress to date and supported the direction of efforts planned for the next few months.
Upcoming Additions to the tool:
- Climate model scenarios downscaled for the offshore from UAF-SNAP
- Social and economic data from UAA-ISER including population, housing, income characteristics, energy prices, and capital projects.
- Arctic Shorezone dataset, including geomorphological and biological characteristics.
- Arctic Council infrastructure data layers.
- Extending the AOOS data system to ingest operation shapefile import so that AOOS can access and pull GIS resources produced daily from partners without using staff time. Once this is complete, Axiom will import, style, and document operational shapefiles including the NWS sea ice forecast, the NIC sea ice character, and the Shell sea ice analysis.
- Developing a spatial analysis tool with the capability to draw a polygon over an area and retrieve a listing of what datasets contain data within the region.

Upcoming Activities:
Winter Workshop – In February 2014, STAMP partners will host a workshop in Anchorage with a broader array of decision makers and stakeholders. This hands-on workshop will be used to: share the results of the user needs assessment and tools assessment; share case studies of use of data integration and visualization tools by others; further assess needs for additional tool functionality; and garner feedback on prototype tools. The workshop will provide agency managers and stakeholders with the opportunity to view and test the Arctic Portal and its various applications developed to date.
