Anchorage Coastal Cleanup Day a Success

On Saturday, Sept 8th, seventy community members gathered along Anchorage's Coastal Trail to pick up trash and improve the health of the beach.  The event, organized by the Ocean Conservancy, was part of the International Coastal Cleanup series taking place across the globe in September.

The volunteers picked up over 5,000 pieces of trash along Anchorage's coastline.  The most common culprits were building materials, nails, broken glass, cigarette butts, and various types of plastics.

AOOS participated in the effort, with staff members Darcy Dugan and Nathan Hollenbeck, and Board member Paul Gill from the US Coast Guard.  It was also rewarding to see so many children out on the beach contributing their energy and enthusiasm!
