Great news for Cook Inlet and Kachemak Bay mariners!  The Lower Cook Inlet Wave buoy is back online! Offline since May due to dead batteries, the original buoy was successfully recovered by C&C Salvage on July 31, 2020, and a new upgraded buoy deployed on August 14, 2020.

The Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS) presents its Proposed Five-year Strategic Direction for Public Review document that outlines major elements of our strategic plan for AOOS for the next five years (2021-2026). We are circulating this summary of the draft plan for public review to garner additional input. Please send feedback to kent@aoos.org.

The Yukon River Chinook salmon run arrived just about as expected based upon the pre-season run timing forecast.

We are excited to announce that the Alaska Coastal Mapping Strategy has been released. AOOS thanks all our partners including Alaska Mapping Executive Committee members, NOAA, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the State of Alaska for their hard work and contributions to the strategy.

We are pleased to share a new report, "Bering Science: Spring 2020 Bering Region Ocean Update." This report was developed by a team facilitated by a partnership between AOOS and the University of Alaska Fairbanks International Arctic Research Center (IARC).

The Early-Look forecasts that 15% of the Yukon River Chinook Salmon run will arrive on the Yukon River Delta by June 11th, 25% by June 14th, and 50% by June 19th which is very close to last year’s early-look forecast.

The Alaska Harmful Algal Bloom Network recently released a summary of monitoring efforts and conditions documented in areas around the state during 2019.
