Model: WAM-CY4.5.1C and CY4.5.2 – Time dependent discrete spectral wave model

Modeler:  Bob Jensen, US Army Corps of Engineers

Funding Entity:  US Army Corps of Engineers.  For all Alaska related work, projects have been funded by the Alaska District.

  • Input: Bathymetry, winds, and ice fields (the latter two are spatially and temporally varying).
  • Scope:  Varies based on the scope of the work.  The model can run in an oceanic mode (i.e. the entire Pacific Ocean), regional mode (i.e. the Bering/Chukchi Sea) and sub-regional scales like Cook Inlet.
  • Resolution: varies based on the application
  • Timeline: Various projects date back to late 1990’s. This project will end by FY2011.

Strengths: Provided good wind forcing it provides accurate wave climatologies when compared to measured data.

Weaknesses: At times it does overestimate wave conditions in very strong storms, however all wave models of this class do the same.

Additional Data Needed: At times it does overestimate wave conditions in very strong storms, however all wave models of this class do the same.
